Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), a reporter living in San Francisco, struggles when his life seemingly turns upside down overnight, after digging too deep when investigating something called the “Life Foundation”. A humourous at times, yet equally as brutal movie that may not have quite lived up to heights some had initially expected.

Eddie as a character was played extremely well – there was more humour than I’d originally expected and that led to the 18+ certificate confusing me somewhat, as this certainly seemed like it would appeal to a younger generation of Marvel fan. With that being said, the flick could be equally as appealing to an older generation of Marvel fan, as Venom was dark, gritty and savage in stages too.
In fairness to the filmmakers, as a viewer, you actually find yourself becoming invested in Eddie’s life and his story, especially when it begins to crumble beneath him and he finds himself having to start from the bottom to re-build. He’s a relatively relatable character too – he wasn’t super wealthy, infact, he was struggling to get by, and rather suddenly his partner ended the relationship in which he was seemingly happy in.
As the movie developed, it become more of a head to head between Eddie and Carlton (Riz Ahmed), which was a classic case of good vs evil. There were also some rather impressive twists and turns thrown in there too, making the film less than predictable throughout.
Rather interestingly, the closing scenes of the movie pointed towards a second film – something that is currently being worked on. A good enough film that was watchable, but certainly didn’t hit the heights that many had expect pre-release.
