The Wrong Missy (2020) – Review

After Tim (David Spade) seemingly meets and then consequently invites the woman of his dreams on a work retreat to the beautiful island of Hawaii, he quickly realises he’s mistakenly sent the invitation to someone else – a previous date who turned out to be nothing short of a nightmare from the get-go. From there on, chaos ensues. Unfortunately, not one of the finest releases from Netflix who seem to be very hit and miss in the comedy genre.

Being a big David Spade fan, it’s fair to say that I was pretty excited to catch the latest release from Netflix, The Wrong Missy. Sadly however, that excitement turned quickly into disappointment after sitting down to watch this one and realising that this wasn’t quite the laid back and easy to watch comedy, I had originally hoped for. Instead, getting through the entire movie was somewhat of a chore…

The humour in large parts was more cringe, annoying and embarrassing than laugh out loud or even amusing. Lauren Lapkus, who played Missy, was unbelievably overbearing in her role and the kind of irritable behaviour she brought to the table never really slowed down as the film wore on. It’s probably worth noting too that not only her character, but every character involved, didn’t particularly hold any redeeming qualities either. To my surprise, there was also some very hypocritical sexual scenes that if they were shown in reverse, probably wouldn’t have made it past the script writing stage.

Despite the rather unlikable characters and lack of genuinely funny or even amusing moments, the flick was easy on the eye, however. The production value and general setting was extremely impressive, especially when taking into the consideration the picturesque location of Hawaii – where the majority of the movie was shot.

As mentioned, David Spade adopted the role of Tim, the man at the center of much of the chaos, while Lauren Lapkus played Missy. It’s always worth noting that in my eyes, it’s tricky to adjust to David Spade when he isn’t playing the typical womanising character he is often known for and unfortunately in this one his persona didn’t stick with me. In fairness to the filmmakers and people in charge of the casting however, they did do a good job with the surprise inclusions of Roman Reigns early on in the flick and then Jorge Garcia who was also included.

Overall, a below average Netflix release and most definitely not something I’d recommend to a friend or family member, despite the attractive and tropical setting of Hawaii.
