The Black Tent (1956) – Review

Deep in the African desert, a British man named Charles Holland (Donald Sinden) is on a mission to find his brother, David Holland (Anthony Steel), a soldier who had recently been reported as missing. Upon arriving at the camp in which his brother had last been seen, he quickly begins to realise that this disappearance isn’t as straight-forward as he’d hoped. With help from the locals, the truth quickly begins to reveal itself. An interesting drama with elements of romance and war blended well together.

Bones and All (2022) – Review

Maren (Taylor Russell) is a young woman learning how to survive on her own, while discovering things about herself that very few people can understand. When she meets Lee (Timothee Chalamet), they join forces and embark on a road trip across America. Despite their best efforts, all the roads taken ultimately lead back to their terrifying pasts and to a final stand that will determine whether love can survive their oddities.

Hot Summer Nights (2017) – Review

In the summer of 1991, a reclusive and sheltered teenage boy called Daniel (Timothee Chalamet) comes of age during the wild few months he spends on Cape Cod in the United States, gaining money from selling marijuana to anybody that would buy the product. Daniel falls in love for the first time and spends the majority of his time partying, before eventually realising that he is in over his head. Hot Summer Nights was released in 2017 and stands out as one of the finest releases of that year.

Anastasia (1956) – Review

A group of Russian exiles in Paris, France, come together to try and collect a ten-million-pound inheritance from the Bank of England, by grooming a destitute, out of sorts, young girl named Anna Koreff (Ingrid Bergman), to eventually pose as heir to the Russian throne. The group, fronted by General Sergei Pavlovich Bounine (Yul Brynner), do such a convincing job that the girl quickly believes that she is the real Anastasia all along. Their ultimate fate is to be decided by the Empress (Helen Hayes), who is extremely skeptical of the situation. A classic cinematic release, dating back over sixty years, that received more than one Oscar nomination.

The Tender Bar (2021) – Review

Junior (Tye Sheridan) is a boy growing up on Long Island, seeking to find a father figure to replace the one that abandoned him shortly after birth as well as doing his best to please the rest of his family. Spending a large amount of time at his uncle’s bar, Junior begins to listen closely to all the patrons and their stories, learning on a daily basis before leaving for Yale University and becoming a writer. An easy to watch and relaxed drama that is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The Power of the Dog (2021) – Review

Charismatic but troubled rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) inspires fear and awe in those that are around him. When he finds out that his brother George Burbank (Jesse Plemons) has fallen in love and married a woman with an older son, Phil torments the pair mercilessly, but exposes his own frailties in the process. A decent drama that has been receiving a large amount of praise. The Power of the Dog is now streaming on Netflix.
