Call Me Chihiro (2023) – Review

Chihiro (Kasumi Arimura) is a former sex worker, turned bento shopworker in a small town in Japan. She’s free-spirited and tends to avoid playing by the normal rules of life. Along the way, the film follows her journey as she tries forming friendships with people that others wouldn’t, including that of a young boy that lacks the attention of his mother, a young girl that feels trapped by her family and a homeless man that’s often mocked by others. It’s worth noting that Call Me Chihiro is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Trip (2021) – Review

Lars (Aksel Hennie) and Lisa (Noomi Repace) are a dysfunctional married couple heading to a remote cabin in an attempt to reconnect as a pair and rekindle their love. However, each actually have the intention to kill the other, but before either can carry out their plan of execution, an unexpected turn of events occur, and visitors arrive to present an even greater danger. This new addition to the Netflix streaming service suits the time of the year well and certainly wasn’t the worst release of 2021.

Prey (2021) – Review

Four friends accompany Roman (David Kross) on a weekend away to celebrate his bachelor party, which consisted of hiking in the unsettling, German wilderness. Suddenly, however, the group begin to hear gunshots nearby, quickly coming to the realisation that they are under attack. In a desperate bid to survive, the group of men must do all they can to avoid falling prey to the mysterious and relentless shooter, but that wasn’t going to be as easy as it seemed. This is a new German production that has recently been added to the endless catalogue of films that Netflix provides us with.

Blood Red Sky (2021) – Review

A group of armed and dangerous terrorists hijack a transatlantic plane heading to the United States from Europe, but unbeknownst to them, a woman suffering from a mysterious illness is also on the flight and is quickly called into action to try and prevent the deaths of everyone onboard. Not the worst way to spend an evening, especially considering some of the newer material released lately on our streaming services. It’s also worth noting that Blood Red Sky is currently available to watch on Netflix.

The 8th Night (2021) – Review

An experienced monk who holds his prayer beads in one hand and a deadly axe in the other, aims to hunt down an age-old spirit that has awoken, and at the same time is determined to cause as much carnage and devastation as possible on planet Earth, by possessing humans one by one. An interesting and unique concept brought to us by a set of Korean filmmakers. It’s worth noting that The 8th Night is currently streaming on Netflix.

Ride or Die (2021) – Review

Rei Nagasawa (Kiko Mizuhara) is a woman that finds herself murdering the abusive husband of another woman that she’s been in love with for over ten years – Nanae Shinoda (Honami Sato). While on the run together after the murder, the pair rekindle their feelings and try to enjoy the last moments they have together, before their freedom is ultimately taken from them. An at times striking drama, filmed and captured in Japan, that has just been released to Netflix.
